Although the concept of positive reinforcement and the related principle that you get what you reward is well founded in the psychology literature, its effective use by practicing managers is uneven and often totally lacking in day-to-day business operations. As part of his Ph.D. requirements, the author set out to explore why this was so and what conditions enable or inhibit the use by managers of non-monetary recognition (NMR) in organizations today. This article focuses on just one significant finding from the study: the impact of age on the use of employee recognition in the workplace today.
